Accountability: The Glue That Holds Your Goals Together

You read our post on SMART Goal Setting.

You read about how to work out what diet is right for you, and which kind of training.

You’re all set to crush some habits this year and keep your results for the long term!

But how do you make sure you stick with it?

This is the part so many of us don’t plan for.

And as we all know, if we fail to plan, we plan to fail.

We CANNOT rely on motivation and willpower to help us reach our goals.

Motivation is a MOOD, a FEELING.

It is the kindling that helps us get the fire started, but it’s also going to burn out at some point. If we rely on motivation, we will keep working towards our goals for a while, but once it runs out, we will drop off.

Willpower is FINITE – that is to say that it is LIMITED.
Ever noticed how when you have a long, stressful day at work, it’s way harder to make good choices in the evening?

The salad you planned to make turns into ordering McDonald’s delivery.

The gym class you planned to go to turns into a Netflix binge.

It’s not your fault – it’s just that you were relying on the strength of your willpower to get you through. Once you’ve used up so much of your willpower making other decisions, it’s easy for us to let our personal goals fall to the wayside.

So if we can’t rely on motivation, and we can’t rely on willpower (although we can still train and use both!), what’s a more reliable alternative?

In particular, external accountability. Accountability comes from the things that make you check in with yourself and say, “Hey, didn’t you say you were going to do X?” It reconnects you to your goals, and makes sure you don’t give up, even on days where you feel like doing so.

When it comes to your fitness goals, this can take the form of things like:

  • finding a gym with a great community, so that your gym buddies check in on you and make sure you’re coming to class
  • hiring a personal trainer to make sure you show up every day
  • putting your gym classes/sessions in your calendar in advance and setting alerts to make sure you leave on time

With your nutrition goals, this could be:

  • hiring a nutritionist to check in with you and keep you on track
  • keeping a food diary
  • hiring a meal service to prep your food if you know you won’t have time

All of these things give you reminders of your goals, even at times when you might not feel like thinking about them.

When your motivation is high, they will give you an extra boost. When it is low, they will help carry you through and keep you on track.

The community you surround yourself with, and the people and services you hire to help you are a KEY part of creating the accountability you need to stick to your goals for long enough to achieve them.

This is why at Fortitude Bali, we make sure we have expert coaches who care, and want to support our clients and our community. Even if you are only here for a week, a month, or even just a day or two – our coaches and nutritionist are ready to keep you accountable to your 2020 goals!
